How to Make a Log Bench in a Modern Rustic Style
In recent years, gardening has become popular furniture made from sawn logs, combined with metal elements. It looks beautiful and expensive, but it also costs accordingly. The costs of assembling it when manufactured independently are minimal. If you have basic woodworking tools and a great desire, you can make such a bench at home.
Materials:
- a log of suitable size;
- profile pipe 30x30 mm;
- black spray paint;
- wood varnish.
Bench manufacturing process
To assemble the bench, you will need to cut a thick slab from the log. It is desirable that it be a hard wood. You can cut it with a chainsaw. Croakers are also sold at sawmills for the price of firewood.
Using an ax, you need to cut off the bark from it.
Next, you need to level the plane of the slab. Since it is heavy, a jointer will not help here. You can go over it with a plane, but they won’t create an ideal plane. The problem is solved by installing the slab motionlessly between two edged boards placed on their sides. This allows you to lay a transverse board on them with a hand router attached.In this way, you can display its plane as on a professional machine.
Using the available tool, it is necessary to cut the ends of the workpiece strictly at right angles relative to the processed front surface. Then a groove is selected on them for installing a 30x30 mm profile pipe. This is done with a manual circular saw or the same router.
The leveled and reverse side of the slab is sanded. Then A-shaped legs for the bench are welded from the profile pipe. It is important to make them perfect with even corners, without burns or unprotected seams. The combination of the naturalness of the slab and the precise shape of the legs will look very advantageous.
The legs are painted. Then you need to paint the slab itself with black spray paint. It is immediately washed off with a solvent, then the surfaces are lightly sanded. This simple patina will allow the wood grain to show through. It is then coated with clear varnish.
Finally, it is necessary to make plugs from wood to install in the legs so that they do not become filled with soil. They have the same patina. Then the legs are screwed to the slab.
The bench is ready. It looks absolutely amazing.
