How to make a wireless wifi camera for a smartphone from a laptop camera

This is a homemade product from the category: “what else can be made from the parts of a broken laptop?” The laptop actually has a lot of useful things for DIY. In this master class we will use his camera. Let's make it wireless so you can view it through any smartphone at a distance of up to 50 meters.

Will need

  • Wi-fi module -
  • Boost Converter -
  • Lithium-ion battery 3.7 V 550 mAh -
  • Video camera from a laptop or netbook.

How to make a wireless wi-fi video camera

We disassemble the laptop and remove the camera from it.

It is a separate board - a module.

In essence, this is a regular webcam with a USB interface. Therefore, it can already be used without modification: just solder the wire with the connector and plug it into the USB socket.

Take the wifi module. It also has a USB interface. This is also a ready-made device that is used as a wifi adapter.

We take the universal board and cut a rectangle from it.

Solder the converter to the board. We connect the battery to it through the connector. The power system is now ready. The camera and adapter will be powered by 5V.

We connect to the output of the converter multimeter, and by rotating the variable resistor on the converter board we achieve an output voltage of 5 Volts.

Next, solder the wifi adapter plus and minus to the output of the converter.

Solder the wires to the video camera.

Next, connect the camera to the wifi adapter: “+” to “+”, “-” to “-”, “D-” to “D-”, “D+” to “D+”.

We will place the camera on the back of the board. We insulate everything with heat shrink.

At this point, the wireless wifi camera is ready. Let's connect battery power to it.

On Google Play, download any “P2P Camera” application and install it.

Let's find the camera in the list by the name of the module and connect to it.

Let's go into the installed application and see that a new device is displayed.

Click and expand the image.

The wireless video camera is working.

As already mentioned, its range is enough for about 50 meters of line of sight, which is quite good.

And the end of your camera since the power is “slightly” different from 5 volts to the smaller side

Look at the 5th picture in the row: the supply voltage is written there on the camera board - 5V. Why will it burn???

I took a usb web camera and a usb wif adapter. USB double connector soldered the contacts together. I soldered the power supply to the converter. I installed the Xeoma program on my computer. Nothing works.

Because it's fake. This is not the first fake video from the author of the video. Without a chip, the camera module from the phone can connect to USB. And if you look closely, you can see the contents under the heat shrink have been replaced and the picture quality does not match the camera module.

Hello. Unfortunately, it is not possible to open the components using the links. I'm interested in the model of WiFi module you used, the name is not readable in the photo. Please write what kind of WiFi module this is.

As far as I know, in the USB protocol, one device should always be the host, and the second the slave. And without additional devices (at least a microcontroller), both the camera and the module are slaves. The Wifi module does not have brains on board that will be able to correctly interpret the signal from the camera... Correct me if I'm wrong.

Take a closer look at the lens on the camera board and the lens in the heat shrink slot. Is it just me or are they different? One with notches and a whitish spacer around the lens, and the other without?

Everything is working. I've made dozens of cameras like this.
