An elementary way to automatically supply water to a container for showering or irrigation

Regularly filling a high-mounted barrel for a summer shower with water is not easy, and overflows are possible. But if you make an automatic system for filling and turning off water using components from an old toilet, then all the problems will disappear by themselves.

Will need

  • Metal barrel with a lid for 200 liters;
  • plastic float;
  • ordinary fitting;
  • brass valve;
  • worm clamp;
  • 15 mm hose with tap and quick-release coupling;
  • fum tape.
To install the system you will need: a drill with a drill and a conical bit, a hex head screwdriver and two 24mm open-end wrenches.

The process of installing an automatic water supply for a summer shower

We drill a hole for the valve thread closer to the upper edge of the barrel and insert it there with the thread facing outward.

We put a float on the end of the valve lever bent to the bottom.

To ensure a tight seal, we wrap fum tape around the valve threads and first screw the fitting on by hand, and then tighten it using two 24mm open-end wrenches to prevent leaks.

We put a clamp on the hose and pull the end of the hose onto the fitting.Tighten the worm clamp screw with a screwdriver head.

Open the tap on the hose and wait until the container is filled.

Water will fill it until the float, which floats up along with the water level in the barrel, closes the valve through a lever.

As the water flows, the float lowers and opens the valve again. Everything happens automatically. There is no need to lift the hose onto the roof and lower it down each time.

    A friend of mine has several racks with metal and plastic barrels with taps all over the site and this is how he waters and also showers
