How to easily make a garden barrel automatically fill itself
In order not to periodically manually top up containers for summer showers, drip irrigation or nipple drinkers, you can embed a float valve into them. It will automatically open as water is used up and add it to the required level. It can also be installed in a garden pond or swimming pool to compensate for evaporation.
What you will need:
- float valve;
- adapter fitting for garden hose;
- O-rings;
- fumlenta;
- worm clamp.
The process of installing and connecting auto top-up
A hole is drilled in the wall of the container closer to the top edge corresponding to the diameter of the thread on the float valve.
A valve is inserted into it from the inside of the barrel and tightened with a standard nut. If its tube is plastic, then it is necessary to compress it moderately.
The adapter fitting for the garden valve is screwed onto the valve outlet. An o-ring is inserted inside it. It is advisable to additionally wrap the threads with fume tape.
If the valve threads are very small, you can screw a barrel onto it with a transition from 1/2 to 3/4 inches. Then it will be possible to screw a fitting with an external thread into it.
Next, a garden hose is pulled onto the fitting and secured with a clamp. All that remains is to adjust the upper position of the float so that it shuts off the water supply at the desired level. Be sure to check the garden hose for fistulas when switching to automatic top-up, as it will constantly be under pressure.
