How to cast epoxy handles for hand tools
Handles for hand countersinks, awls, screwdrivers and other tools can be cast from epoxy resin. This method is especially convenient in the manufacture of tool sets, when the handles must be the same. Let's look at how you can make ready-made handles from epoxy resin, which do not need to be processed on a lathe.
Materials:
- molding silicone;
- epoxy resin;
- lubricant for molds.
Handle casting process
Two-component molding silicone is mixed in a separate container.
A clean glass is used as formwork for pouring it. Above it in the center you need to hang a tool with a suitable handle for copying. It should not reach the bottom of the glass, and not protrude above its edges.
The contact surfaces should be lubricated with mold release agent and then filled with silicone. The glass is tapped to expel air bubbles. After the silicone has hardened, the finished mold is cut on one side to the molded handle in order to remove it.
The form is held together with a few turns of tape. Then a tool without a handle is suspended above it.All that remains is to pour epoxy resin tinted in the desired color into the mold and wait until it dries.
After the composition has hardened, the mold opens and the tool is removed.
In conclusion, all that remains is to modify the resulting handle with a file to remove casting flaws. The form can be reused.
