How to cut a cable professionally
If you cut or bite off a bicycle brake cable with ordinary wire cutters, sooner or later its end will become frayed and fluffy, and tiny steel hairs will stick out in different directions, which will dig into the skin like needles if you accidentally touch this area.
This can simply be avoided by cutting the end of the cable correctly.
Will need
- Pliers.
- Screwdriver or drill.
- Gas-burner.
We cut the end of the cable correctly
We clamp the end of the cable into the screwdriver chuck. We hold the cable at some distance with pliers. And we heat the middle between them with a gas burner.
It is not necessary to have a super high-temperature burner; almost anyone can heat a thin cable until red hot.
And as soon as the body of the cable, which was heating up, turned red and began to turn white, we sharply turn on the screwdriver.
The hot place will not withstand the load and will break with twisting of steel hairs, which will definitely not unravel in the future.
Most importantly, before tightening, make sure that the screwdriver will twist the cable in the direction it is twisted, and not vice versa. Otherwise, the cable will fluff up even more.
This trick can also be done with motorcycle cables. The tip turns out neat, slightly tapered, which is very good if you need to thread it somewhere.
