How to repair a kitchen knife with a broken shank

After some time or excessive stress, the knife blade may break off at the base of the shank. It seems that after such a breakdown the knife cannot be restored. But don’t rush, there is an opportunity to give the knife a second life.

How to repair a knife with a broken shank

First of all, we will return to the knife blade its qualities lost during operation: straightness, remove the jagged edges from the spine and restore the edge of the blade. We will also trim the remaining part of the shank using a file, a vice and a grinder. We sand the planes of the blade with wet sandpaper and wipe with a dry cloth.

From a piece of sheet metal we make a part that we will put on a piece of the shank, and it will serve as a heel and at the same time a guard, using a drilling machine, needle files, a grinder and a grinder. The required dimensions of the part are obtained by grinding with sandpaper.

Cut a piece of the required length from a round steel rod with external thread. At its end, using a grinder, we cut a groove in the center in the longitudinal direction along the length corresponding to the remainder of the shank. We insert into the oblong hole of the part with the functions of the heel and guard a threaded section with the side with the groove, which will cover the piece of the shank in the hole and strengthen the connection.

In a wooden blank with the contours of a handle along the side surfaces, we drill a blind hole for a threaded rod from one end. To cut out the shape of the handle we use a jigsaw.

Thoroughly mix components A and B of the liquid metal in tubes, transparent and black, respectively, until a homogeneous gray mass is obtained. Fill the hole in the handle with the resulting mixture, apply it to the threaded rod, which we place all the way into the hole in the handle.

Let it sit for a while until the mixture sets and cut off the excess with a knife.

We bring the shape of the handle to the desired shape with a grinder, a grinder, files of various shapes and sandpaper. Then we coat the handle of the knife with some compound, for example linseed oil, and polish the surface with a dry cloth.

All you have to do is sharpen the knife and it is ready to go.
