How to make a fish hook remover

The modern market offers a great variety of devices for removing a hook from a fish’s mouth, called fishing extractors. They differ in design and the material from which they are made. It can be wood, plastic or metal. In order not to waste money and time on buying them in a store, you can make an extractor yourself at almost no cost from an old bicycle spoke, and this work can be done by any adult.

Will need

Materials:

  • Old bicycle spoke;
  • old toothbrush;
  • universal superglue.

Tools: pliers, hammer, stump (or thick board), iron nail, flat screwdriver, hacksaw blade for metal, drill, etc.

The process of making a device (extractor) for removing a hook from a fish's mouth

Using pliers, we bite off the ends of an old bicycle spoke and bend one end, about 1 cm long, at an angle of 90 degrees.

We drive the bent part of the knitting needle with a hammer into a stump or thick board. We hammer in an ordinary iron nail nearby and tightly wrap the knitting needle several times around the nail.We pull the nail out of the wood and find something resembling a spring with a small “tail”.

Holding the knitting needle by the semblance of a spring with pliers, we bend the straight part of the knitting needle at the base by 90 degrees so that it is collinear with the longitudinal axis of the spring part of the knitting needle.

We spread the coils of the spring slightly apart with the tip of a flat screwdriver and, using a hacksaw blade for metal, cut off the short “tail” at the end of the spring. We round the cut area with a file.

Using the same hacksaw blade, we remove the head part of the old toothbrush, and in the remaining mass of the plastic handle, we drill a fairly long blind hole with a drill, corresponding in diameter to the cross section of a bicycle spoke.

Cover the end of the straight part of the knitting needle with universal superglue and firmly insert it into the hole in the toothbrush handle and let the glue harden.

To easily remove a fishing hook from a fish’s mouth, we rotate the spring part of our extractor around the fishing line until it is inside between its turns.

Now it is enough to hold the fish with one hand and move the extractor forward in the direction of the fishing line with the other. As a result, the hook will be on the coils of the extractor and removed from the fish’s mouth along with our device.
