Making 2 new tools from an old screwdriver
Everyone has at least one or more old screwdrivers that are lying around idle because there are new and more convenient ones. At the same time, it’s a pity to throw them away, since they are made of high-quality metal. Such screwdrivers can be put to good use by being converted into new necessary tools.
What you will need:
- old screwdriver;
- Bulgarian;
- cutting disc;
- cleaning disc or emery;
- vice;
- emery cloth.
Screwdriver conversion
First you need to renew the slots of the screwdriver by sanding it using sandpaper. If it is cross-shaped, then grinding is done in a circle at an angle. After this, the length of the slots will decrease, but they will again be able to grip screws and self-tapping screws.
After this, the rod is cut in the center.
If the rod has a square cross-section, its edge on the half with the handle must be rounded.
After this, it is clamped in a vice and cut from the end along with a thin cutting wheel to 10-15 mm. For aesthetics, the tarnish color after cutting can be wiped off with sandpaper, at the same time removing burrs.
A handle with a cut on the rod is used to screw in and unscrew spool valves into the nipple.At first glance, it may seem that the tool is useless, since this can be done with a metal cap. However, the homemade product is also used as an extractor for pulling out a nipple that has fallen inside the disk. To do this, the tool is inserted into the spool with slots, taken lightly at the break and pulled towards itself. It is especially effective on thin bicycle and motorcycle tubes. It will be more difficult to pull out the nipple of a heavy truck inner tube, but if it has sunk shallowly, it is possible.
The slotted part of the screwdriver can be used as a screwdriver bit. If the metal of the screwdriver turns out to be good, then such a bit will live longer than the Chinese one. If necessary, it will be easy and not a pity to sharpen it to fit screw heads with specific slots, which they like to install on European household appliances.
Screwdrivers with a thinner shaft can be sharpened into an awl. Thanks to the handle, it will be very convenient for them to work. If the tip of such an awl is heated until red-hot, and then cooled sharply in oil or water, then as a result of hardening, the result will be a scriber for marks on metal. Although the tip will become brittle after hardening without tempering, the scriber is not a core, and no one will hit it so that it breaks off.
