How to quickly make a hole without drilling in tool steel
With the advent of almost every drill, screwdriver or drilling machine, making holes is done exclusively by drilling. The presence of such a tool made it possible to abandon the old techniques that were used before its distribution. However, it doesn’t hurt to know about forgotten methods.
For example, you need to make a hole in the blade of a hacksaw in order to hang it on a nail. Anyone who has ever tried to drill it with cheap Chinese drills knows that it will take a long time to tinker. If you just take a piece of cloth, put a nut under it, put a punch on top and hit it with a hammer, you can cut a hole.
Considering the characteristics of this steel, you will have to hit it several times, but that’s not the point. After this, creases of torn metal will appear on the back of the blade from the nut side.
They need to be ground off using sandpaper or a grinder. The result is a hole that is not perfectly round, but acceptable.
The same method applies to the bow saw blade. For its manufacture, steel with completely different characteristics is used, but the method still works.
Let's clean the canvas first.
And sharpen the teeth.
Let's cut off the required piece.
By placing a nut and a punch, you can make 2 holes in a piece of blade, and use it in a hacksaw for metal.
The method works not only with steel, but also with other sheet materials that are not brittle. A punch can be used to make a hole in the roofing slate. It does not use a nut. For slate, use a punch with a blunt tip. The hole is made with 2-3 light measured blows. After that it is used under the nail. A hole is made with a punch faster than with a drill, so the method is useful even if you have a drill. Important! You should not immediately pierce slate without a punch with a nail, since it has a sharp tip. Sharp ones can cause cracks and damage the sheet; this does not happen when working with a blunt punch.
When punching holes, unlike drilling, it is more difficult to regulate their diameter. Therefore, you need to choose a punch of suitable thickness and place a nut of the correct size under it. Its internal diameter must correspond to the required hole, or be one size larger. Then it will serve as a limiter and will not allow you to overdo it. If the punch is too thin, and the required hole diameter will only be achieved if you drive it halfway, then the height of the nut will not be enough, so you can substitute a tube instead.
