How to easily sharpen meat grinder knives

This method of sharpening meat grinder knives is available to everyone. It will not require specialized tools or devices from you; because of this, it will take a minimum of preparation and you can start sharpening almost immediately. This is the simplest and most common technology that is suitable for both electric and manual meat grinders.

What will you need?

  • A whetstone for sharpening regular kitchen knives or a wooden block with a piece of sandpaper.
  • Some tap water.

Do-it-yourself sharpening of meat grinder knives

We start by disassembling the meat grinder. Unscrew the ring and take out the knives.

On knives that have been in use for a long time, risks, nicks, and chips are clearly visible.
A round knife is called a mesh knife. The edges of the holes suffer: they chip, become dull and become rounded. Also, with very long use, knives can acquire a wavy surface instead of a straight blade.

So, we take a sharpening stone, it should be flat. You can also use a grinding wheel.

We soak the sponge in water and wet the surface of the whetstone for sharpening knives.

We place the knife from the meat grinder with its blades on the block and, using a back-and-forth movement, with slight pressure, we begin sharpening. The duration of sharpening depends on the degree of wear. If you do this regularly, then one knife takes about 2-3 minutes of continuous work.

If you don’t have a sharpening stone, you can make it yourself. You need to take a piece of straight board or a straight block of wood and a piece of sandpaper. The finer the grain of the paper, the better.

We tuck the paper under the block. For better fastening, you can fix it with a furniture stapler, but this is not necessary - when pressed, the paper holds itself perfectly and does not slide off.

We wet the surface of the knife with water and also sharpen the meat grinder knives with reciprocating movements.

By the shine and the disappearance of marks in the form of circles, you can determine the evenness of the surface and the level of sharpening.

And I sharpen meat grinder knives much easier. I take a hand sander with an eighty-grit belt and sharpen it. Fast, high quality, no blockages

Of course it’s easier if you buy a grinder.

For now, both the knife and the new grate will do to freshen it up.
If you are already old, a short-lived illusion, to calm your conscience purely...

An abrasive and a hard flat surface give you a chance to restore sharpening; well, patience is natural.
Yes, the weak link is the slab, that same flat surface; to keep it flat, two more are needed.

In this way, only one set can be sharpened on this stone; sharpening the rest will be useless.

Most likely, after SUCH independent sharpening, the meat grinder will finally stop chopping meat and will only “chew” - and this will force you to go to a professional and have your knives sharpened correctly and efficiently. so there will undoubtedly be benefits. *

I wrote my comment there. "Nulevka" + glass. I worked as a butcher and always used knives in a professional meat grinder. And on the day of minced meat, a lot was made for the market. The knives have never spoiled.

Tell me, please, how is this “nulevka” + glass?

“Nulevka” is sandpaper from the zero series, and glass is needed in order to sharpen knives on a perfectly flat surface.
Those. sandpaper is placed on the glass, and then everything is done as written by the author.

In general, the sharpness of knives is of course necessary. But it is very important that the knives adhere to each other. Tight, no cracks. This is already more difficult to achieve. It won’t be possible in one two minutes

It is impossible to sharpen knives efficiently in this way. Because it is difficult to ensure uniform pressure on the tool being sharpened

I sharpen on a grinding machine. Everything else is crap. Checking for good sharpening is the “sticking” of the knife and the grid to each other in any position.

They stick to each other because they are magnetized on the table.

Fine-grained sandpaper should be placed on thick glass instead of a block.

Good advice. But is delicate processing really that important? I think this is an exaggeration. The second (light) side of the block has a grit of 200, it seems that with a few light movements you can achieve the musat effect, i.e. minimal metal removal.

The method works. The meat grinder is old, still Soviet, and all the filling is the same. After sharpening on a grinding wheel from a sharpener, I began to cut, rather than chew, meat.
