Do-it-yourself tiling of the stove

A house with stove heating not only means significant savings on utilities, but also constant warmth, regardless of the time of year. Over time, the stove loses its pleasant appearance and needs cosmetic repairs. Painting and whitewashing the stove are becoming a thing of the past, and they are being replaced by tiling.
You can cover the stove with tiles yourself, you just need to have the desire and the necessary building materials. We will tell you in detail how to do it yourself in this article.

How to choose the right material

Construction markets and shops offer a huge amount of tiles for different tastes and budgets. You should not chase too low a price; in most cases, such cheap tiles are not able to serve their owners for a long time. You should choose tiles that are resistant to high temperatures, easy to clean and not too heavy.

Preparing the oven surface for cladding

Before proceeding with cladding, it is necessary to prepare the surface of the furnace. For this we need:
  • Putty knife;
  • Wire brush;
  • Sand-cement mortar;
  • Primer mixture.

Using a spatula and a metal brush, it is necessary to clean the surface of the oven from any existing contaminants. Next, a primer mixture is applied, which must be fireproof. We wait until the mixture dries completely and plaster the stove structure with sand-cement mortar. The walls of the furnace must be smooth, the entire success of the work depends on this.

Furnace tiling

For cladding, both special construction adhesive and cement mortar are suitable. Laying tiles is done from the bottom up, pay special attention to the first row, it must be perfectly level. The glue should be applied with a special notched trowel. The first tile is taken, special glue is applied, then it is applied to the base and fixed. Then you need to check the tiles for evenness using a level. We perform the same actions with the following tiles. It is worth noting that each glued tile must be checked with a level. If unevenness occurs, after the glue has dried, it will no longer be possible to correct it.
Excess glue protruding onto the surface is immediately removed using a special narrow spatula. In those places of the stove where the tiles do not fit in size, you will have to cut them using a tile cutter. After the furnace lining work is completed, you need to wait a day for the glue to dry well.
The next day we move on to grouting the joints, using gypsum mortar and a rubber spatula for this, excess mortar is removed with a damp cloth. After a few hours you can wash the oven.

    I have exactly the same stove at my dacha. Almost all the paint has peeled off. I think I'll be taking the advice on cladding soon. Thanks for the tip!
