DIY chain saw from window lift drive
For quick pruning of branches in the garden and rough cutting of small-section wooden pieces, you can use a miniature chain saw of your own making. This tool runs on a regular 12V battery. That is, it is autonomous and mobile, which allows it to trim the top branches of trees, climbing up the trunk to them without a ladder.
Materials:
- window lift motor;
- steel blank for turning;
- steel plate 3-4 mm;
- drive sprocket for a chain saw;
- saw chain;
- chainsaw guide bar;
- switch.
Mini chain saw manufacturing process
The power unit of the saw will be the window lift motor.
To do this, you need to disassemble its gearbox and modify it a little, since under load its shaft usually stops rotating.
To do this, a new crown bushing is machined, which provides more reliable adhesion to the plastic gear of the gearbox.
From a steel plate you need to cut out a piece on which the tire will be attached. A gear stop is cut on it. The plate is then screwed to the gearbox.
Next, you need to install the drive sprocket from the chainsaw on the gearbox shaft. Since they are incompatible, the sprocket is machined and drilled, and the ground part from the socket head is pressed into it.
After screwing on the drive sprocket, you need to shorten the standard saw chain to the required size. Then the tire is cut to fit it. The edge with the driven sprocket is used from it. Where it is cut, guide grooves for the chain can be cut with a grinder. Be sure to divide the cuts on the bar in order to be able to tension the chain.
A protective knife is screwed onto the top of the saw mounting plate, which will prevent accidental contact with the chain. A handle extender is also installed. It will allow you to comfortably hold the saw directly behind the engine. A switch or pressure button is screwed under the finger.
The saw uses a 12V battery as a power source. The wires from it are connected to the motor through a button. If the battery is light, then you can make a mount for it and carry the battery directly on your belt.
Before work, the saw chain is sharpened and lubricated. In this case, even due to the low speed of the window lift motor, it will cut the wood like a hot knife through butter.
