How to restore worn plastic car interior
Over time, the painted plastic parts of the car interior become worn. First of all, abrasions appear on door trims and handles. Such defects can be completely corrected at home without special equipment by using paint in cans. To ensure that the restored decorative surface is perfect and does not peel off later, you need to adhere to simple technology.
Worn plastic parts are dismantled.
The paint is removed from them. The easiest way to remove it is by wiping with Scotch Brite abrasive material soaked in 646 solvent. It will not just wash off the old paint, but will also apply an abrasive mark, which will improve adhesion when painting.
It is quite possible that the paint will be washed off with solvent alone without the use of an abrasive. During operation, you need to make sure that 646 does not corrode the surface of the plastic, since it is capable of dissolving some types of plastics.
If there are deep scratches on the surface cleaned of paint, they need to be sanded with fine sandpaper. At the same time, it is important to level everything smoothly so that after painting the depressions are not visible. Then the prepared part is degreased.
The parts are hung before painting. After this, 2-3 layers of aerosol primer for plastic are applied to them. Its use will prevent the new paint from peeling off in flakes. There is a 10 minute pause for drying between the primer layers.
After the primer, several layers of base paint are applied. It can also be from a spray can. Then you should open the paint with varnish, which will greatly increase the service life of the new layer. It is better to start spraying varnish and paint from the recesses on the parts. If you paint the edges first and then the recesses, there is a high probability of getting smudges. It is better to do many thin layers than few thick ones. In this case, you won’t have to rub or polish anything.
After painting and complete drying, the plastic parts are installed in place. This technology is also used to restore a scratched bumper. It cannot be painted without a special primer for plastic. A regular metal primer does not adhere to such surfaces, so the paint falls off very quickly.
