How to cut a glass bottle
Today, “Hand Made” creativity is gaining more and more momentum every day. Very often, handicraftsmen use glass bottles in their creations. They are used to make vases, lamps, stands, etc.
I'll show you a very simple way to cut a bottle evenly in almost a few seconds.
All we need is nichrome wire, a 12 V battery and cold water.
First you need to determine the location of the incision. To make it even, take a piece of paper and wrap it around the bottle. Align the edges of the sheet so that the line is straight. Then take a felt-tip pen or marker and draw a border along the edge of the piece of paper. Now the leaf can be removed.
Next, you need to take a piece of nichrome wire with a diameter of 0.5 mm and attach one end to a stationary object. For these purposes I use a black weight. We immediately attach one wire from the battery to it.
We make a loop around the bottle. And we align it along the mark from the marker.
To avoid getting burned, take the wire with pliers. We tighten it just a little so that the wire is aligned.
Apply voltage to the second end of the wire.
It can be seen that the wire is hot.In places of contact with the bottle, the wire does not completely turn red, since the bottle takes away heat.
We wait without moving the wire and holding it under tension for about 30 seconds.
Then we quickly remove the wire and spray the heating area with water. You can also prepare a bucket of water and dip the bottle in it.
You will hear a peculiar click of the glass, and the bottle will burst exactly along the line where the nichrome wire passed.
The explanation is simple: when a certain place is heated in the glass, internal stress arises. After sudden cooling, the surface of the glass cools sharply, but its interior remains heated. As a result of such a sharp change, microcracks appear, which instantly turn into splits.
This trick can be done not only with round bottles, but also with square, oval, etc.
If the bottle does not break off after drinking water, then simply grab it by the neck and press slightly. Everything must fall away.
All irregularities and sharp edges after cutting can be processed with fine sandpaper.
When working with glass, be very careful not to cut yourself. Be especially wary of small fragments and take all necessary measures to avoid their spread.
