A simple but effective fight against computer noise

I always thought that the noise in a computer was created solely by the fans running inside to circulate air. Oh how wrong I was! After all, the bulk of the noise is created by the computer case itself. All vibration from all working parts of the computer such as the hard drive, fans or cooler is transmitted to the case.

And what’s most interesting is that the vibration from the case is transmitted quite well to surrounding objects, in particular to the stand on which the computer stands.
I will offer you one simple action to understand - that five minutes is enough to make your PC a little quieter!

To do this, you need to place vibration-absorbing material between the PC and what it stands on. The material may be different, but the softer and thicker it is, the better. At the top of these materials there will be a piece of foam rubber.

Here's my PC. It's quite noisy.

After a soft fabric backing, the difference is quite noticeable! In particular, low-frequency noise disappeared.

I would advise you to do the same.

Good luck !

The main thing is that the bottom cooling hole is not closed. Some models have it at the bottom. it will be much safer and more economical This Just put it under your feet. Well, if you use vibration damping pads for the HDD, the system unit will become quieter. You can also independently cut such gaskets from any suitable material for mounting coolers and optical drives. That's exactly what I did. And if you manage to cover the inside of the case with noise insulation for the car, only the air coming out of the system unit will sound. The main thing is not to “cut off the oxygen” to the car!

By the way, don’t put it on top, otherwise it almost caught fire one time  :wassat:

I advise you to buy silent coolers and not invent a bicycle.

Disgusting advice on finishing the inside of the case with sound insulation. The walls of the housing remove heat from heating parts. When covering the inside of the case with noise insulation, heat removal will be difficult and will only be carried out through ventilation. The PC may overheat.

I must say that empty cardboard boxes also help. But too strong can have the opposite effect, too weak can bend under the weight of the computer. Foam rubber, by the way, can be quite toxic, especially when it deteriorates over time.

At one time I used electrical tape as a gasket in the places where the “mother” was attached to the body and around the perimeter of where the covers were attached to the body; there is not very thick electrical tape. Excellent vibration dampening...

but I don’t hear any noise at all.. sometimes I think where he is.. and he’s on the street on the window.. he punished him and it’s not cold for him to warm himself up.... and he didn’t invent the wheel.. ..

There is no need to buy cheap cases made of thin sheet metal, and there will be no unnecessary noise.

Over 25 years of working with computers, I have accumulated extensive experience in noise reduction. Be sure to use a gasket under the body! This will eliminate resonance and the transfer of hum to the tabletop, which itself will be a source of hum. It is best to cut the gasket from thick foamed linoleum on a felt base. The computer will stand on its legs, just like on a table, and air from below will flow freely. Cover the walls, roof of the case and the sides of the Hdd basket with vibration-damping material for cars - based on bitumen and foil. Don’t listen to nonsense about the deterioration of heat dissipation! Your heat is removed with hot air by fans, the walls don’t play even half a percent. All fans must be secured with rubber bolts, they can be found in the computer. stores If not or you are sorry for the money, cut out gaskets from porous material both for the corners of the fan housing and for the screw heads. Don't over-tighten.It is best to make these gaskets from polyethylene foam sheets. It can be found as packaging for a monitor or video card, etc. Apply regular electrical tape around the perimeter of the side covers of the case to prevent metal from clinking against the metal of the case. And lastly, when buying even an expensive computer case, try to choose one where the block for installing hard drives is attached only to the top part, but does not reach the bottom. If it is installed vertically from floor to ceiling, the vibration of the hard drives will transmit forced mechanical vibrations to the computer case. fluctuations. And this creates the most terrible and difficult to overcome hum, as it was for me. The company makes good cases. There, a block for installing 5-inch devices is suspended from above and to the middle, and a basket for two hard drives is attached to it from below on a sled. And the basket is actually fixed with one screw. Such a system almost does not transmit the vibration of the hard drives to the case, the walls of which are made of thick steel and also do not rattle. So such cases are quiet in themselves.

Oh my goodness! Gentlemen, those guys who design and manufacture cases for our PCs don’t think about noise and heat at all. Well, figure out for yourself the flow of incoming and outgoing air! stupid, in terms of area... well, and...
I had a hole in my "belly" approx. Cut out 100x150 and arrange “stilts” for the system engineer, because standard 5mm legs physically do not allow air to penetrate inside... well, not that they do not allow it, but they actively prevent it. and you understand Zalman will help you..
