How to easily make round furniture handles without a lathe

The absence of a woodworking lathe is not a fatal obstacle to the manufacture of round conical handles for furniture. Its functionality can be successfully and completely replaced by a band saw paired with a grinder. Moreover, you don’t have to be a professional carpenter to do this. It is enough to have the skills to safely handle these tools and be able to perform simple actions.

Will need

Materials:
  • wooden beam;
  • wooden rod;
  • wood glue
Tools and accessories: carpenter's compass, band saw, grinder, drilling machine, electric drill, etc.

Manufacturing process of round conical furniture handles

Using a carpenter's compass, we make a circle of the required diameter on the surface of a wooden beam, the size of which is selected based on specific circumstances and personal preferences.

In the center of the marked circle, we drill a blind hole of the specified diameter and depth using a drilling machine.

Using a band saw along the intended circle, we cut out a round conical blank in the shape of a furniture handle.

To ensure a strong connection, apply wood glue to one end of a wooden rod that fits tightly into the drilled hole and insert it tightly into the blind hole of the conical workpiece until it stops. We give time, in accordance with the instructions, for the glue to dry and securely strengthen the connection.

We fix the free end of the rod into the chuck of an electric drill and grind the conical generatrix of the furniture handle, and then chamfer along the sharp edges of the generatrix.

We insert a rod with a shaped length into a hole in the wall of a drawer or furniture door, fasten it there in the chosen way, and our homemade handle looks good and perfectly performs its intended functionality.

    How simple...Well, the name, let’s just say, a wood lathe is much cheaper than the equipment used by the author;)
    In principle, it was possible to confine oneself to just a drill, holding a blank for a handle in a chuck and using a file and sandpaper to obtain what was required. But a grinder is used, of course a good thing, but not everyone has it! And even a tap saw, no less rare in the household...

    And the funny thing is, with the method shown, it is almost impossible to achieve identical handles!
