How to make a simple and effective muffler for any vehicle

The muffler is affected from the inside by hot gases, and from the outside by unfavorable atmospheric factors (rain, snow, low temperature). Because of this, it often burns out and even burns out, and ceases to perform one of its main functions: to reduce the noise emitted by the exhaust gases from a running engine. If you have some plumbing skills and simple materials, you can make a muffler yourself, and it will work no worse than the factory one.

Will need

Materials:
  • Pipe made of heat-resistant stainless steel of the calculated diameter;
  • larger diameter stainless steel pipe;
  • a stainless steel pipe elbow smoothly bent by 90 degrees;
  • glass wool layer;
  • two identical rings made of galvanized steel;
  • high temperature paint.
Tool: straightened steel angle, marker, grinder, chisel, hammer, welding machine, drill, etc.

The process of making a homemade muffler for a vehicle

We apply uniform transverse and longitudinal markings to the heat-resistant stainless steel pipe, stepping back one step from one edge and leaving the estimated length at the other end.

In a checkerboard pattern in the transverse direction, using a grinder, we make through cuts along all the generatrices and the length of the markings on the heat-resistant steel pipe.

Using a chisel and a hammer, we bend the metal in front of each slot on the pipe to the maximum possible depth without overall deformation of the diameter and as a result we obtain a uniformly perforated pipe in the longitudinal and transverse directions.

We cut out rings from metal.

We securely weld a stainless steel pipe bend smoothly bent at 90 degrees to the short end of the perforated pipe.

Using a layer of glass wool, which can withstand even the flame of a gas-acetylene burner, we tightly overlap the perforated pipe and put a round stainless steel pipe on top of it. The glass wool should completely densely and evenly fill the annular space between the two pipes located concentrically.

We hermetically weld galvanized steel rings of appropriate size to the ends of the pipes on both sides.

To protect against adverse atmospheric factors and provide a “marketable” appearance, we paint the outside of our homemade muffler with high-temperature paint.

We compare a homemade muffler with a straight pipe on the same engine and under the same engine operating conditions. You can clearly hear that the sound of a running engine with a homemade muffler is quieter than with a straight pipe.

    The glass wool will be crushed into dust and scattered throughout the area. There will be a scabies epidemic

      I don’t know, my Ford samovar is stuffed with stuff that looks like glass wool.

    Even air filters become clogged over time, and then there is exhaust containing microparticles and resinous substances. Yes, such a “glutener” a week before the engine lost power.

    Gradually, the cotton wool becomes saturated with oil (especially if the engine is oil-rich), and at some point you get an exhaust with a flame.

    Old idea, I forgot the call sign of the author, very talented!. The point is a smooth expansion of gases without a severe pressure drop across any partitions and changes in the direction of gases. Glass wool - extra or outside :)

    A little quieter than an ordinary pipe, but essentially straight ordinary. There is no labyrinth, nothing. I made it from food-grade stainless steel; by the way, the jar doesn’t get so hot, so it costs normally. And no cotton wool.
