How to Make a Square Hole in a Steel Piece
If you need to make a square hole in a massive steel workpiece, you can use one tricky method. To implement it you need a milling machine. Let's consider this method using the example of making a bushing.
Necessary equipment:
- milling machine;
- lathe;
- Bulgarian.
The process of "drilling" a square hole
The part to be drilled must be placed on the milling machine table perpendicular to the future hole.
Using a cutter, a deep groove is selected in it, equal in width to the required hole.
Next, a square rod is prepared that corresponds to the parameters of the required hole.
It fits into the groove. An insert is then cut and machined to cover the remainder of the groove.
The workpiece is rotated 90 degrees. A rod with a tin gasket is placed in it to create a gap. Next, an insert is placed in the groove and secured to the side with a clamp.
After this, the workpiece must be drilled through in two places along with the insert.
Steel pins are driven into the holes and cut off.
They can be adjusted to the desired diameter on a lathe. For strength, it would not hurt to secure the pins inside the workpiece with solder so that they do not fall out.
Next, the blank is processed on a lathe to the required dimensions.
If the part is not made with a round profile, then it can be sanded with a grinder or modified with a milling cutter.
