Restoring broken holes for door hinge screws

Restoring broken holes for door hinge screws

Interior doors in our apartments and houses last for decades, but if there are small children who love to ride on them, this period can be significantly reduced. The screws connecting the door leaf to the hinges break the wood over time and may even fall out completely. A thicker screw does not solve the problem, especially if it is a bathroom door. This is where the load is heaviest, and there is also high humidity. All that remains is to fix the door yourself, especially since it is not so difficult to do.

What tools and materials will we need?

  • 2 wood drills 9.5 and 2 mm, as well as a drill or screwdriver;
  • Wooden dowels 9.5 mm thick;
  • Wood glue and a thin brush (the kind that children use to paint);
  • Hammer and screwdriver;
  • New self-tapping screws (yellow/white, but not black - they can break under the head with great force);
  • Old dish sponge.

Restoring broken seats for door hinge screws

We drill out the broken seats to the permissible depth (you can completely “flash” the frame beam into a hollow door, nothing bad will happen).We try on a wooden dowel (but do not insert it all the way!): it should fit tightly into the hole with a minimum gap.

If the sizes match, use a children's watercolor brush to treat the surface inside the holes with wood glue and directly process all the dowels. The main thing is to remember to rinse the brush with warm water before the glue dries.

We insert the dowel as far as finger strength allows, and then lightly tap it with a hammer to hammer it in flush. Remove excess glue with a damp sponge, after which you need to wait for it to dry. We will reschedule further assembly for the next day.

Final assembly

After the glue has dried, attach the loop and mark the center of the seat with a pencil or awl. Use a thin drill to make a hole to the depth of the screw. In this case, you need to make sure that it will be less than the thickness of the screw, otherwise everything will have to be repeated again. Next, we place the door against the hinge and use a screwdriver to tighten the screws without excessive force.

Results of the work

After this procedure, the door will last for a long time, even if the children ride on it again. But now you know what to do, so you shouldn’t scold them too harshly.

    I installed the door with epoxy, without any dowels, everything holds up perfectly. no need to worry too much.

    If the door frame beam cracks when driving in the dowels, you will have to replace the entire door

    What for are such difficulties, you stick in a couple of matches and that’s it. If there is a decent amount of force on the screw, then you can coat it with PVA.
