Hammer from a crutch
To perform small work in the form of engraving and embossing, it is important to have a special tool, one of which is a small hammer. Its dimensions and light weight allow:
- perform minor work without fear of damaging other elements;
- work for a long time without fatigue in your hands;
- optimally distribute the weight of the impact, controlling the applied forces.
The cost of such a tool can be quite high. Therefore, many craftsmen prefer to make it themselves, while adjusting its parameters to their needs. They use a regular railway spike for this.
The process of making a hammer from a railway spike
Choosing a railway spike. It must be free of obvious defects or deformations.
We clamp the crutch in a vice and completely remove the rust coating from it. To do this we use a grinding machine.
And a belt sander.
At this stage, it is very important to remove all traces of corrosion, even if they are deeply embedded in the metal.
If we are going to make two hammers from one crutch, then we need to measure their length in advance, dividing our workpiece approximately in half.
In each half in the middle we mark a hole for the handle.
Using a drilling machine, we make the necessary holes. The handle usually has an oval profile. Therefore, each hammer will require 2-3 holes, located as close to each other as possible.
At the next stage, using a file, we process the resulting holes, connecting them until an oval profile is obtained. We also process the entire workpiece, removing all burrs.
We cut the workpiece into two parts, getting two types of hammer. One will have a standard look, and the second will have a wide heel.
To make tool handles, we take hard wood. When choosing the length, we focus on our personal preferences and production needs.
We process the handle blanks with a special file, giving them the required shape.
We also create a seat for the hammer. We make a cut on the seat to install the wedge.
At the assembly stage, epoxy resin is diluted to cover the seat. Next, place the hammer on the handle and wedge it.
The remains of the handle on the other side of the hammer are removed, and the wooden product itself is coated with oil.
All these operations are carried out with a second hammer.
The end result is this beauty:
