Can you get the diode separately from a junk dealer? It’s just a shame to spoil a good disk drive on your computer, and a new one costs 1000 rubles, which is a bit expensive for such a trinket...

And as I understand it, the diode needs to be turned + - instead of a flashlight bulb? :winked:

A diode CANNOT be plugged in stupidly instead of a light bulb - it will burn out quickly. You definitely need a “driver” (for example, a simple circuit with one transistor or at least a resistor connected in series with the laser diode). Combo cd/dvd devices have 2 diodes separately for cd and dvd, both of which can be used for these purposes. You also need a lens to focus the beam, otherwise you’ll just end up with a “flashlight”

The article is “empty”, but I suspect that it doesn’t contain the main thing - apart from the driver you need to take not just any diode - it won’t work from a CD, only from a DVD, and there are also tricks when soldering.
And in general, even a reflected ray can permanently damage your vision. So I don’t recommend it without special ones. safety glasses (designed for the correct wavelength...
