Decorating a lantern

Candlestick in the form of a lantern

A candlestick in the form of a lantern is an original interior decoration. In the darkness of the room, a flashlight leaves bizarre shadows on the walls and ceiling - in the shape of stars, as well as in the form of butterflies painted on the glass. Decorating it is very interesting and not difficult.

So, what materials do we need to prepare for work?

1. A blank candlestick in the form of a lantern in white, gray or any other color.
2. Primer, preferably transparent.
3. Acrylic paints and silver outline on glass.
4. Pliers for removing glass.
5. A medium sized flat synthetic brush and a large coarse brush.
6. Acrylic matte or glossy varnish.

First stage. To make working on a flashlight convenient, you must first remove all the glass from it. To do this, use pliers, bend the metal holders and carefully pull out the pieces of glass. After this, it is advisable to wipe the glass to avoid smudges and fingerprints.

take all the glass out of it

Now our candlestick can be primed without fear that the primer will stain the glass. We take a flat synthetic brush and cover the entire flashlight with primer, both outside and inside. Leave to dry.

Second phase. While the soil dries, you can work on the glass. In this master class, butterflies were drawn on glass using a silver outline. But you can choose absolutely any design. We select a suitable pattern from the Internet, reduce the picture to the size of glass and print it out. If you don’t have a printer at home, you can transfer the image with a pencil from the monitor screen or even draw it yourself.

There are six glasses in total, on each of them you need to draw half a butterfly, which will then be combined into three whole butterflies. We take the picture, place it under the glass, and outline the translucent image on the outside of the glass.

We outline the glass

So we draw a butterfly outline on all six glasses and leave them to dry for about 12 hours. If desired, the drying process can be accelerated with a hairdryer.

Third stage. Let's return to our lamp. Now that the soil has dried, the candlestick can be painted with dark brown acrylic paint. Stir the required shade on the back of the plate and paint over the entire lantern, outside and inside, with a flat synthetic brush.

When the paint has dried, squeeze out a little of the silver outline we used to paint the butterflies onto a clean palette-plate. Take a large, rough brush, dip it in silver paint and move the brush across the palette to get rid of excess paint. Please note that the brush must be completely dry - this is the only way to get the effect we need.

Let's go over the entire candlestick with a brush, highlighting the protruding places and leaving thin strips of silver. This will give our workpiece a noble aged look. The stars can be highlighted especially by painting silver paint around them.

Fourth stage. After the paint has dried, coat the candlestick with acrylic varnish and wait for it to dry.The varnish dries completely within 24 hours, but ceases to be sticky after just a few hours.

When the varnish has dried, and at the same time the butterflies have dried, the glass can be inserted back. Pliers or any other metal tool at hand that seems convenient to you will also help us with this.

That's all, the glass is in place, the flashlight is ready. Now you can place a candle inside and enjoy its beauty.
