How to make lever scissors for cutting rods and wires
When working with steel wire and thin reinforcement, you can use homemade lever scissors, which have a very easy-to-make design. This is a powerful working tool, for assembly it is enough to have welding, a grinder and a drill.
Scissors are made according to the principle of a bolt cutter. His knives are made from thick steel strip.
To do this, take 2 blanks.
One of them is made 2 times longer than the second.
A hole is drilled in the knives and they are screwed together with a bolt.
A wide cutout is made in their end part, into which reinforcement and wire will be inserted when cutting.
To attach the scissors to the table, a massive steel plate is used, which will serve as their sole.
2 short posts with holes made from strip are welded to it.
Knives are installed on them. A short knife is welded to the stand with a slight downward slope.The second long one retains mobility.
With a slight indentation from the first attachment point, 2 more strip posts are welded to the sole, but longer. Holes are also drilled in them at the top.
Next, you need to make levers to reduce the effort when moving the knives. To do this, take a piece of strip with a hole at the edge and screw it to the free posts.
Then you need to connect this strip with a long knife. To do this, holes are drilled in them. Then they are connected on both sides by short levers made of a thinner strip.
The scissors are almost ready. To prevent the knives from deforming during operation, it is necessary to harden them. To do this, their cutting part is heated red-hot with a burner or in a forge, after which it is cooled in oil.
The shear power arm should also be lengthened. To do this, a thick-walled pipe is welded to it. The longer it is, within reason, of course, the easier the effort when biting the rods.
These scissors can be useful for cutting thin reinforcement and wire. They will help you quickly make blanks for bending clamps for knitting armored belts and solving other problems. For ease of work, their sole needs to be screwed to a heavy table or workbench. It would also be a good idea to lubricate the rubbing parts with oil.
Materials:
- steel strip with a thickness of 10 mm or more;
- steel plate;
- M12-M16 bolts with nuts – 4 pcs.;
- thick walled steel pipe.
