A simple do-it-yourself gasoline generator made from available parts

Your attention will be offered to two designs of the simplest homemade gasoline generator, made on the basis of an engine from a trimmer and a car generator. The power of such an installation can vary from 1 to 2 kW. It all depends on the power of the engine and the power of the car generator. The output voltage is 12 V, but no one forbids connecting an inverter and increasing the voltage to 220 V.

In general, such a homemade product is available to everyone, since the engine from a trimmer may well be lying around in your workshop, and finding a car generator is not a problem at all.

Will need

  • Gasoline engine from trimmer. It is advisable to use a 4-stroke, of course, but a 2-stroke will do just fine.
  • Working car generator. It already has a built-in control system for stabilizing the output voltage.
  • 12 V battery. Not necessarily large and powerful, it will only be used for starting. Without it, the generator will not produce electric current, since the initial voltage must be applied to the collector for primary excitation.

Option 1: Direct Drive Gasoline Generator

Its design is simple and uncomplicated, as you can see. The only difficult step will be preparing the shaft of the drill chuck.

In order: the shaft is cut, sharpened on a lathe, and threaded to fit the chuck.

Next, the cartridge is screwed into which the electric generator shaft is clamped.

Next, everything is fixed on a wooden stand. The difficulty is to secure all the units well, so that their axes are in the same plane, so that the runout during rotation is minimal.

We start the gasoline engine and connect the generator to the battery. We check its operation with a voltmeter and a light bulb.

Option 2: petrol generator with belt drive

Very similar to the first one, only a belt is used to transmit rotation. A pulley is attached to the trimmer shaft, and everything is connected with a belt.

We fix everything on a wooden base.

We start the trimmer and also check the operation.

Application

In winter, such a generator will be a godsend for those who have a weak car battery. You can easily carry such an installation with you in the trunk; it will not take up much space.

But in general, the generator can be used in a variety of ways. As mentioned earlier: you can connect a powerful inverter and power any 220 V load, including power tools.

The idea is not bad for some emergency situations, but how will you solve the issues:
    1. Adjusting the engine speed, depending on the load on the generator, the speed may fluctuate greatly, it will not appear to set the throttle and use it.
    2. The trimmer speed is about 8-9 thousand. It is better not to turn the generator more than 5 thousand, as the efficiency of the generator decreases. In principle, this can be solved with a belt reducer, but the efficiency also drops on it.
    3. The service life of the piston group is 2 tons (I haven’t seen 4 tons of trimmers), the trimmer ranges from 20 to 200 operating hours, again, very little for constant use.
    4. What is the maximum power that can be extracted from an internal combustion engine, taking into account the fact that the generator is not operating in optimal mode? Most likely, with a direct drive it will be about 0.4 - 05 kW, with a gearbox it is quite possible to squeeze out about 0.8 kW.

You can take a tractor generator, it does not require a battery, but you need to pay attention to the maximum permissible rotation speeds - you should not connect it directly to the engine from the trimmer, it is better to use a belt drive, having first calculated the required gear ratio.

Hmmm... Starting a push-pull trimmer in winter?
Well, yes. Well, yes. There is, perhaps, something heroic in this too.
    Although... cases are different. Yes.

And what about sub-zero temperatures in all places on the planet in winter? Is it not possible to keep this “launcher” at home?

It’s a bulky thing to roll around in the trunk, and there will be a smell of gasoline, it’s better to carry a booster with a charge capacity of at least 15,000 Ah, it starts the engine when the battery is completely dead... takes up little space, and the advantages are more than its cost...

noisy, not low consumption, not cheap. A gas generator is cheaper, more economical and quieter.

A simple DIY gasoline generator made from available parts. You might think that gasoline engines and generators are lying around everywhere. They cost money. What about turning work? It’s easier to buy a 1 kW gas generator.

Did you want to get 1 kW from plastic bottles for free??? Some are freeloaders who don’t want to do anything. Finding a gasoline engine is not a problem.

A good inverter for two kilowatts costs 6 thousand rubles. Chinese ones with a modified sine wave (automotive) are not suitable for everything; they cannot be used in equipment with AC electric motors (washing machine, refrigerator, etc.)
